Camera case makeover

The pineapple on the paper napkin

I was in one of the artistic shops that I visit regularly, and I saw this napkin with a  pineapple design, and I bought it. I did not have any specific project to use it, but I bought it because it had pineapples on it. It immediately reminded me of one of my favorite tv shows:  Psych.

The pineapple became an icon of the show because it was present in every episode, in different formats, from fruit to print. The Icon was born after the protagonist improvised a line with a pineapple in the pilot episode. The truth is that every time I see a pineapple or a pineapple design, I can't help but immediately associate it with this tv show.

The project

When I purchased my second-hand digital camera, the salesperson kindly included the case. It was in pretty good condition, but it needed it a makeover. It was just an aesthetic issue of the anti-slip covering coming off.

To prep the surface, I took out all the red covering, and it ended cover with something like a white fabric. Originally my idea to restore this case was to cover it with a flower-patterned fabric and to use mod podge to glue it, but when I tried to do that, the fabric did not stick. So, I had to resort to something else, and it was then that I thought to try a decoupage technique using paper napkins, and among those, I chose the one with the pineapple design.

The process

First, I cleaned the glue from the surface to be able to paint a layer of yellow acrylic. I don't know why I painted it. I could just have glued the napkin onto the white base oh well, live and learn. Unfortunately, I stained the black zipper a bit with yellow paint.

It was a bit difficult to mold the napkin to the curves of the case, and on some parts, it broke a little (luckily, it does not show much). One of the hardest parts was cutting the napkin around the loops that are there to pass a belt. To do it, I covered all that part with the napkin, and then with a cutter, I slowly opened the openings on the sides. To finish, I gave it a layer of mod podge over the entire surface to protect the napkin a bit.

Every time I see it, I feel so happy. It turned out very well. I love it! Now I´m thinking of doing something similar to my tablet case. Stay tuned!
